The purpose of the First Amendment was to guarantee that if you are born in the United States of America, you have the freedom to say what’s in your mind and you can pretty much practice whatever you want without being judged for it.
Limits: The First Amendment has limits when using it as a threat to others, and spreading hate speech would be making a false public statement to pass as the truth.
When it comes to freedom of the press, the information that is shared with the public should be factual and not put out a false message that fits an agenda to influence others or to support an idea. Like CNN, a major news platform has been known in the past to put out inaccurate news.
Someone, I think, faced some repercussions for a speech they gave back on January 6 2021. Trump gave a speech that encouraged his supporters to storm the Capitol, and after that, multiple lives were lost as a result.
One Example of blogger defamation is the Johnny Depp and Amber Heard case; both are actors. In 2018, Heard wrote an opinion column for The Washington Post in which she accused Johnny Depp of abusing her; the allegations proved false.

How understanding the history and limits of freedom of speech and the press impacts me by helping me know when to use freedom of speech and the press and when not to.
Disinformation
Disinformation is when someone shares false information with the purpose of manipulating or making an audience believe the false information being provided. One famous example of Disinformation is when the Nazi use propaganda to get the support of the German people to justify their hatred for jews.
The importance of fact-checking before accepting it as the truth is so that you don’t believe a false narrative. Especially in today’s world, it’s important to verify information from multiple sources before believing it, especially with the rise of AI.
Fact-checking is important in our study of media literacy because when we understand how the media works, we can better understand how to navigate around it and not get tricked in any way online into believing something that is not true. And in today’s age, a consumer can fact-check information through multiple outlets, especially news. Site Politifact is a good fact checker.
One instance I was exposed to false information online is when a user on TikTok claimed a famous celebrity had passed away. After doing my own research, I found out that it was fake.
False news is easier to spread than ever due to the rise of social media apps like Facebook and Twitter, which can spread information in a matter of seconds.
